In & Around Bordighera
The large town of Bordighera is located some 20km from the borders of France, on a narrow strip of coastline where the Maritime Alps plunge into the Mediterranean sea.
From the old town which is perched on a hill, one can see the sprawl of red tiled rooves under which the grand old villas, apartments and hotels grace the wide boulevards of the new town. In the near distance, is the the most south westerly French town of Menton, the skyscraper buildings of Monaco, and beyond.

Beaches and promenades
The Riviera coastline from France into Italy down through Liguria is mostly rocky, meaning almost all public beaches are pebbly or rocky as far as Alassio. Bordighera is no exception with a long stretch of beach running the length of Via Guglielmo Marconi, and the long promenade of Lungomare Argentina. However, there are a few lovely, privately managed sandy beaches not far away. Here, the amenities are generally pretty good and include access to decent snack and lunch menus. There is a managed beach to suit every need; physical fitness beaches, luxury beaches, beaches with spa tables and pet-friendly beaches, as well as pedal boat and surfing board rental agencies.
Shops and markets
Bordighera and the neighbouring big towns of Ventimiglia and San Remo between them have every size and type of shop you could hope to come across; from artisanal craft stores (selling everything from marbled writing paper to handmade patisserie) to antique shops, specialist delicatessens and big brand clothes shops. Market lovers have a choice of markets to browse in, with stalls in the town on Thursday mornings. Or head to nearby San Remo (Tuesdays and Saturday mornings) or Ventimiglia (Fridays).
